How quickly a month goes! It’s already time for this month’s preview of new releases for the month, so what are the Devon Dice crew excited for in September:
Sam
Freelancers: A Crossroads Game
Publisher: Plaid Hat Games
Designer: Donald Shults
There’s a couple of factors at play with Freelancers that makes me interested. Firstly, it’s the next in the Plaid Hat ‘Crossroads’ series, which started several years ago with Dead of Winter. I also own Gen7, the sci-fi crossroads game, but I’ve not had a chance to play that yet. However, the crossroads mechanic is great. The action of having a card which might trigger depending on the actions taken by the following player is a lot of fun. They may not always trigger, but if they do it makes for interesting scenarios. And in an RPG type game this is even better.
Second, it’s aiming to recreate the feel of playing a tabletop roleplaying game, but in a simple board game format. I infrequently play RPGs, but getting them played and completing the campaigns is frequently an exhausting effort. Having a board game that elicits the same vibe without half the effort would be appealing.
Thirdly, it’s designed by Donald Shultz. I don’t expect many, if anyone, to recognise that name, but Donald is one of the folks who set up Board With Life, which was a web series on Youtube for a time and they also did a long-running ‘real play’ podcast series, which has had me literally laughing out loud on my walks to work!
So all in all, this is one I’m interested in checking out!

Wild Tiled West
Publisher: Dire Wolf Digital
Designer: Paul Dennen
Introducing “Wild Tiled West” – Crafted by the mastermind behind a renowned deck-building game we’ve spoken of quite often. This captivating creation blends dice rolling, intricately woven with the strategic art of tile arrangement. What’s not to cherish? It’s come to my attention that there have been murmurs about the dice balance from a handful of sources. Let’s remain attentive to further developments on this front.
